Bereavement Support in Ulverston: How Carers and Local Resources Make a Difference
Grief and loss are deeply personal experiences that touch nearly everyone’s life at some point. For many of the families we support in Ulverston, Barrow and Millom, bereavement is part of their journey – and we believe that compassionate care should include supporting people through those difficult times.
At Lakeland Care, we understand that homecare isn’t just about tasks or routines – it’s about people, relationships, and the emotional moments in between. That’s why we’re committed to ensuring our team is confident and prepared to support grieving clients and families in a meaningful, sensitive way.
📍 Local Resource Highlight: St Mary’s Hospice, Ulverston
In Ulverston, St Mary’s Hospice is a well-respected provider of end-of-life care and bereavement support. Their Family & Bereavement Support Services offer:
- One-to-one counselling and emotional support
- Community bereavement groups and grief cafes
- Public workshops, including the Bereavement Champion Workshop
These initiatives are open to local people, regardless of whether their loved one was a patient at the hospice. As a Compassionate Company, Lakeland Care is proud to be part of the broader community movement supported by St Mary’s.
👥 Building Bereavement Awareness Within Our Team
Several of our carers have now taken part in the Bereavement Champion Workshop run by St Mary’s Hospice, including our own Madonna, who attended a recent session in Ulverston.
The training equips carers with:
- Practical communication techniques
- Tools for emotional support
- Increased confidence when helping clients or families through grief
These Bereavement Champions are now better prepared to offer calm, compassionate care during incredibly difficult moments – and we’re proud to be investing in training that makes such a difference.
🧠 Simple Ways Carers Can Support Grieving Clients
Whether in a hospice or at home, the small things matter. Here are some ways carers can help support clients and families experiencing grief:
- Be present. Sometimes, quiet companionship is enough.
- Listen without rushing to “fix” things. Grief has no timeline.
- Offer consistency. Familiar routines can be comforting.
- Avoid empty reassurances. Phrases like “at least…” can feel dismissive.
- Know when to refer. Signposting to local counselling or bereavement services, like those at St Mary’s, can be invaluable.
💙 Self-Care for Our Team
Supporting grief can be emotionally intense—for families and for carers. Whether you’re helping a client through loss or facing grief in your own life, please remember:
- You’re not alone
- It’s okay to talk
- You’re part of a team that cares about your wellbeing
We encourage our staff to lean on our Compassionate Care approach: speak with a colleague, your manager, or reach out for extra support when needed.
Thanks to our involvement in the Compassionate Companies network, we’re also able to signpost families to St Mary’s Hospice’s bereavement counselling services. If you’re supporting someone who might benefit from that kind of help, let us know – we can point them in the right direction.
🌱 A Compassionate Community
