MP Michelle Scrogham recognises Lakeland Care’s award-winning home carers

Families looking for home care in Barrow, Ulverston or Millom want to know that the people supporting their loved ones are trusted, skilled and genuinely caring.
That’s why we were so proud to welcome Barrow & Furness MP Michelle Scrogham to Lakeland Care recently, as she visited to personally congratulate two of our nationally recognised carers and learn more about the work we do in the community.

Senior Carer Ashleigh Harvey has been crowned Domiciliary Carer of the Year 2025 at the National Care Awards, while
Joy Turnbull was named a finalist for the prestigious Sara Berrio Care Champion Award.
Both are valued members of our Lakeland Care team, providing high-quality care at home across Furness and South Cumbria.

Michelle Scrogham MP: “They make this town great”

Following her visit to our Barrow office, Michelle shared this message:

“HUGE congratulations to Ashleigh at Lakeland Care & Support Services Limited in Barrow for winning Domiciliary Carer of the Year Award at the National Care Awards 2025! 🎉
I went to visit Lakeland Care recently to pass on my congratulations personally and to hear more about their work. Ashleigh – and fellow nominee Joy – highlight just how the community and people here make this town great.
I’m delighted that Ashleigh and Joy’s hard work and care has been recognised nationally. Well done!!”

Michelle Scrogham MP

During her visit, Michelle met with Ashleigh, Joy and the wider care team to hear about their experiences supporting people at home in Barrow and the surrounding areas.
She continued:

“Joy and Ashleigh have come into the care sector later in their careers, but their dedication and compassion is clear to see.
It was a privilege to meet them and the wider team, and I want to thank them all for the vital role they play in our community.

I also had a chance to talk to the team about issues their sector is facing both nationally and locally, and there was definitely useful information to take away with me.”

What this means for home care in Barrow, Ulverston & Millom

For families considering domiciliary care, this recognition is an important reassurance.
It shows that the carers visiting people’s homes across Barrow, Ulverston and Millom are not only kind and compassionate,
but also among the best in the country.

Ashleigh has progressed from carer to Senior Carer and now Care Supervisor at Lakeland Care,
while Joy is a dedicated care and support worker who volunteers her free time at several local sports clubs.
Their stories highlight the experience, commitment and community spirit behind the care our clients receive every day.

Our teams support adults to live safely and independently at home with:

  • Personal care and help with daily routines
  • Dementia care and specialist support
  • Medication prompts and monitoring
  • Overnight and respite care
  • Companionship and help staying active in the community

“A huge honour for South Cumbria”

Lakeland Care CEO Marge Smyth shared her pride in the team’s achievements:

“We could not be prouder of Joy and Ashleigh – to be shortlisted for a National Care Award is an incredible achievement.
These awards are among the most prestigious in the entire sector, with thousands of nominations from across the country.

For two of our carers here in Barrow to be recognised at this level is a huge honour, not just for them, but for the whole of South Cumbria.
It shows the outstanding quality of care that our staff deliver every single day, and it puts our community firmly on the national map.”
